II.

Jamie sat down in front of his computer. The screen was illuminated at the touch of a key on his well-used keyboard. It was a simple gesture to bring the computer from the sleep-mode it had switched to. Jamie couldn’t help but wish it was just as easy to fire his brain up in such a way too. Despite sitting at the computer, ready to work, he had no idea what to write. Well, he knew what to write it was just he didn’t know how to go about it. Of course it didn’t help matters that the computer seemed to taunt his tired state of mind with its blank page up on the screen. The cursor flashing on and off and on and off and on and off but not making progress along the lines it would be guided upon once he started to type.

Jamie sighed.

There were so many stories to type about but the trick was to choose the ones which were different enough from the previous tales told. If the book were to be too similar throughout then not only would the publisher not be happy but neither would the readers be, once they got their hands on it. What alarmed Jamie more though was the fact that there were more than enough different stories to tell in the first place. Sometimes it honestly felt as though his patients were part of a bigger network of nutters, all seemingly trying to outdo the other with the level of grossness or destruction left in their wake. It truly was a shitty world we lived in and here he was – trying to write about it and for what? A pay-day. This book wouldn’t help further people’s insights into the men (and women) behind the killings. It was just cheap titillation for those who liked reading about such horrors. Worse than that, it was a how-to guide for people who wanted to go and commit such crimes for themselves. They’d read about their “favourite” killers and then they would go out and try and outdo them. Oh well they only killed x amount of people. I bet, if I put my mind to it, I could murder at least double that. It was a scary thought and one which often stopped Jamie in his tracks and made him ponder whether this was even worthwhile. He already had blood on his hands by falling for Billy-Ray’s lies. He didn’t need anymore to be spilt because of him.

‘The sooner you get it done, the sooner you can get out of all of this,’ he said out loud, breaking the silence of his office. He poised his hands upon the keyboard as though it would help bring the words to the screen.

His mind drifted to what Faye had said about working for her office and how potentially pleasant it would be to hear the woes of the everyday Joe as opposed to the criminally insane. “Pleasant” might have been the wrong word,
